  1. ASAM 197 Spring 2012: Asia MEDIAting America

This student-led course will focus on media in the Asian American community, and what role it plays in a number of topics such as transnationalism, cultural exchange and appropriation, Asian/Asian-American representation, Orientalism, race and sexuality, and political activism. The course will review these topics in traditional media outlets, including film, theatre, and television, as well as new media outlets, such as music videos, YouTube, stand-up comedians, comics, and blogs. Students will be required to rotate leading discussions in class with the help a faculty facilitator. In addition, students will hold weekly out-of-class media screenings relevant to the topic of that particular week.

Speakers, workshops, and class field trips will play an important role in facilitating engagement in these issues throughout the course of the semester. Through participation in on-and-off campus activities and discussions, students will explore the topics of media and their effect on the Asian American community while also considering their global implications.

Additionally, students will be collaboratively designing the syllabus for next year’s ASAM 197.
